Laveen Shares Local Health Benchmark Data, Reopening Updates

As we look forward to safely reopening our schools for in-person, on-site instruction, Laveen is following guidance provided by the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) and the Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH).  Both agencies recommend that school districts meet three benchmarks for two consecutive weeks before offering the option of on-site instruction.

On September 3, MCDPH released data that shows Laveen trending towards meeting the public health benchmarks. We will monitor the data for another few weeks to ensure the trend continues.

We are hopeful that we can safely begin the on-site instruction option after Fall Break (October 12).

Immunizations Required for 11-Year-Olds

The Arizona Department of Health Services requires that all 11-year-old children obtain two adolescent vaccines, Tdap and Meningococcal (MCV4), or provide a valid exemption. These new immunizations are important as they will provide protection against serious illness.

Tdap is a combination vaccine that provides protection against three bacterial diseases — Tetanus, Diphtheria, and Pertussis (Whooping Cough). Meningococcal prevents against four types of bacterial meningitis.

Parents should review their child’s immunization records. If these vaccinations have not been received, the child should obtain the vaccination at either their doctor’s office or an immunization clinic. Proof of immunizations will need to be received before the student can begin school.

Children who are not yet 11 will be required to get the new immunizations once they turn 11.

Reopening of Schools Task Force Seeks Parent Input

Since school closures went into effect, Laveen teams have been preparing for the reopening of school in August. We know there are numerous variables to consider in determining what school will look like and that the landscape is constantly changing. We also know that a one-size-fits-all approach is not feasible for our families.

Laveen families are asked to review the three scenarios developed by the task force and provide input. Visit the Reopening of Schools page for details and to take the survey.

Laveen’s Kids Club Approved as an Arizona Enrichment Center

To ensure Arizona’s first responders, critical healthcare workers, and essential public sector employees have the support they need to continue combatting COVID-19, the Governor’s office has partnered with a variety of agencies to offer child care through Arizona Enrichment Centers.

The Kids Club program at Desert Meadows School has been approved as one of the few Arizona Enrichment Centers in the Laveen area to provide this service to essential workers who rely on childcare for their young children to be able to continue to work.

When school closures were first announced, Laveen’s Kids Club team immediately stepped up to provide a day camp experience to children whose parents are considered “essential workers.” This program provides structured activities in a safe, supervised environment for children in Grades Preschool – 6. Until the executive order is lifted, Laveen Kids Club will not provide childcare services to parents who are not considered essential workers as defined by the Governor’s executive order and have been encouraged to keep their children home.

We are proud that Laveen’s program can support the Governor’s Stay Home, Stay Healthy, Stay Connected initiative and serve the families who are working the front lines during this state of emergency.

Qualifying families can find more information about this program at www.LaveenSchools.org/coronavirus or by calling our Kids Club office at 602-237-7058.
